So I’m staying with my cousin and watching her kids…

There’s a six year old, and his older sister henceforth known as M. She’s eight, and I get the feeling I’ll be quoting her a lot.

We’ll start with my showing her Labyrinth. M’s mother and I figured it’s one of those movies that’s appropriate for kids because when you don’t know any better, it really is. But the lovely part was watching her ever so slowly realise there were undertones.

She started out sort of hiding behind me in the scary bits (I love that they really were scary back then), and panicking over whether the bad guy was going to hurt someone.

Roundabouts the ballroom scene, she made an observation, in this very solemn little, look, I’m figuring things out tone.

“…The Goblin King is very handsome, isn’t he.”

It was all I could do to keep my reaction down to “…Yes child. You are correct.”

About ten minutes later, she looks up again and points out “…Sarah said he’d fallen in love with the girl.”

In the end, after looking slightly crestfallen as the owl flew away, she came to a conclusion. “I like this movie. But he needs to visit her…and be nice.”

This girl just summed about 25 years of fandom feels. Thank you, small child.

During one of my naps today I had a dream where I made up this whole film that starred Richard E. Grant
